Cannes 2025: Jafar Panahi Wins Palme d'Or as Global Voices Shine at the 78th Festival de Cannes

The 78th Festival de Cannes concluded on May 24, 2025, marking another spectacular celebration of world cinema. Chaired by acclaimed French actress Juliette Binoche, the prestigious jury awarded the Palme d'Or to Un Simple Accident by Jafar Panahi, a moving and timely piece that captivated audiences and critics alike.

The Grand Prix was awarded to Affeksjonsverdi (Sentimental Value) by Joachim Trier, continuing his tradition of emotionally rich storytelling. Meanwhile, the Jury Prize was jointly given to Sirât by Oliver Laxe and Sound of Falling by Mascha Schilinski, both applauded for their poetic vision.

Kleber Mendonça Filho took home Best Director for O Agente Secreto (The Secret Agent), a film that also earned Wagner Moura the Best Actor award. The Best Actress honor went to Nadia Melliti for her performance in La Petite Dernière directed by Hafsia Herzi. The Best Screenplay went to veteran Belgian duo Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne for Jeunes Mères.

A Special Prize was awarded to Kuang Ye Shi Dai (Resurrection) by Bi Gan, highlighting its visionary storytelling.

In the Short Film category, Tawfeek Barhom won the Palme d'Or for I’m Glad You’re Dead Now, with a special mention for Ali by Adnan Al Rajeev.

Un Certain Regard stood out with La Misteriosa Mirada del Flamenco by Diego Céspedes taking the top prize. Other honors included Un Poeta by Simón Mesa Soto (Jury Prize), and standout performances by Cleo Diára and Frank Dillane.

The Caméra d'Or, recognizing the best first feature film, was awarded to The President’s Cake by Hasan Hadi.

The La Cinef competition, spotlighting student films, crowned First Summer by Heo Gayoung (KAFA, South Korea) as its top winner, followed by compelling entries from China, Japan, and Estonia.

Cannes 2025 once again proved to be a powerful platform for bold storytelling and global talent, setting the tone for a year of unforgettable cinema.
