A Love Letter to NYC Film Culture, Screening Now at MoMA

From June 12 through July 11, MoMA is spotlighting the vibrant history of New York’s film scene with A Theater Near You, a curated tribute series led by writer and film curator David Schwartz.

The month-long program honors 17 influential screening venues—from iconic institutions like Film Forum and Anthology Film Archives to long-gone gems like the New Yorker Theater and Cinema 16. Each venue is represented through film selections that reflect its distinct curatorial style and cultural footprint.

Schwartz, who spent decades at the Museum of the Moving Image, built the series as a cinematic time capsule that blends nostalgia with ongoing relevance. MoMA, a pioneer in film programming since the 1930s, provides the perfect backdrop for this look into the soul of New York cinephilia.
