After Hours and Chess Boards: The Guggenheim New York Unveils Its Mid-May Curated Experience

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York continues to prove that a museum is not merely a static repository of art, but a living, breathing cultural ecosystem. In its latest calendar advisory running through May 31, 2026, the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed spiral is blending fine art with live avant-garde music, digital innovation, and community-driven interactive events.

From celebrating International Museum Day to keeping its doors open for a reflective Memorial Day weekend, the Guggenheim is inviting New Yorkers and global travelers to drop in, slow down, and reset.

The Late Shift: Lauren Auder Takes the Spiral

One of the most anticipated highlights of the mid-month programming is the return of the museum's signature after-hours series, Late Shift. On select Thursdays with the next edition scheduled for Thursday, May 21, from 6:30 to 9:00 PM the museum's atmosphere undergoes a dramatic transformation. The bright, archival lighting softens, the galleries stay open late, and the architectural acoustics of the rotunda are handed over to contemporary musicians.

This month, the Late Shift welcomes London-based French composer, singer-songwriter, and model Lauren Auder. Known for her ethereal, deeply emotional sonic landscapes, Auder will deliver a special performance inside the iconic spiral. The setlist will feature tracks from her critically acclaimed debut album infinite spine, alongside her sophomore record Whole World As Vigil.

  • Ticketing: The event is highly exclusive but remains entirely free for Guggenheim Members.

Interactive Art: ‘Bring Your Own (Chess) Board’

On Sunday, May 24, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, the museum translates artistic concept into social connection. Inspired by the themes within the current Carol Bove exhibition, visitors are invited to bring their own chess boards to Café Rebay.

This monthly ritual extends Bove's invitation to play beyond the museum's physical rotunda, creating a space where friendly competition and unexpected creative conversations can unfold against the backdrop of Central Park views.

  • Logistics: Check-in begins at 2:45 PM, with gameplay starting promptly at 3:00 PM.

  • Perks: Museum admission for the day includes a 10% discount at Café Rebay to enjoy during the matches.

Digital Expansion and Holiday Operations

For those unable to visit Manhattan in person, the Guggenheim is partnering with TikTok for the global “Museums Come Alive” series in honor of International Museum Day. By searching #MuseumTok on the platform, digital audiences can access a dedicated hub featuring behind-the-scenes tours of the Modern European Currents exhibition and highlights from the world-renowned Thannhauser Collection.

Important Scheduling Note: While the museum will remain open throughout the holiday weekend for Memorial Day travelers, it will close early at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 30, for a private event. Regular visitors are encouraged to plan their itineraries accordingly to maximize their time within the galleries.
