MoMA Opens Applications for In the Making 2026 Summer Program

New York City has always been the ultimate classroom for the arts, but this summer, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is taking that experience inside the studio. The museum has officially opened applications for In the Making, its premier free summer program designed specifically for NYC high school students ages 15–18.

More than just a workshop, In the Making is an immersive six-week journey into the heart of the contemporary art world. For students looking to bridge the gap between classroom theory and professional practice, this program offers a rare, hands-on seat at the table of one of the world's most prestigious cultural institutions.

A Studio Without Boundaries

What sets In the Making apart is its commitment to accessibility. The program operates on a "no experience necessary" philosophy, focusing instead on raw potential and a passion for creation.

Led by expert MoMA educators, participants are placed into one of four specialized classes. Throughout the summer, students explore:

  • Diverse Techniques: From traditional mediums to cutting-edge digital and experimental art-making.

  • Collaborative Projects: A mix of solo exploration and group-based work that mirrors the real-world creative industry.

  • Behind-the-Scenes Access: The curriculum is bolstered by studio visits, artist talks, and guided trips to galleries, allowing students to meet working professionals and museum curators.

Removing the Barriers to Entry

Recognizing that talent exists in every corner of the five boroughs, MoMA ensures that financial constraints never stand in the way of artistic growth. The program is entirely free of charge, and the museum provides:

  • All Art Materials: High-quality supplies for every project.

  • Transportation: OMNY cards for easy travel to and from the museum.

  • Daily Essentials: Snacks and coverage of all associated program costs.

The Commitment to Craft

The program is intensive, running from July 7 to August 13, 2026. Participants meet three times a week at MoMA, choosing between morning or afternoon sessions. Because of the collaborative nature of the studio, full attendance is required, fostering a sense of community and dedication among the cohort.

To be eligible, applicants must be NYC residents enrolled in high school or a GED/TASC program for the upcoming 2026–27 school year.

How to Apply

The selection process is merit-based, focusing on the quality and sincerity of the applicant's answers rather than a pre-existing portfolio. Prospective students must submit their online application by the June 1, 2026 deadline.

For the next generation of New York artists, In the Making isn't just a summer course it’s the first brushstroke on a lifelong canvas.
