The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has announced that Christophe Cherix will become its next David Rockefeller Director, starting in September 2025. This landmark decision follows an extensive six-month global search and reflects unanimous approval by MoMA’s Board of Trustees.
Cherix, a Swiss-born art historian, has been a key figure at MoMA since 2007. He currently serves as The Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings and Prints, a position he’s held since 2013. Under his leadership, the museum unified its departments of Drawings and Prints, fostering a more integrated curatorial vision.
With a remarkable record of exhibitions—including ED RUSCHA / NOW THEN (2024), Adrian Piper: A Synthesis of Institutions (2018), and Yoko Ono: One Woman Show (2015)—Cherix has left an indelible mark on MoMA's curatorial identity. He’s also played a pivotal role in acquiring major collections, significantly enriching the museum's holdings.
Educated at the University of Geneva and a fellow of the Center for Curatorial Leadership, Cherix brings deep scholarly insight and decades of curatorial experience to his new role. As he prepares to succeed Glenn D. Lowry, who has led MoMA since 1995, the institution looks forward to a dynamic new chapter under Cherix’s guidance.
